Bristol Waste prepares for ‘shedloads’ of new recycling processing capacity

State-of-the-art processing facility will transform recycling in the Bristol region

We’re marking the construction of a 2,160m2 (23,250 square foot) building at our Avonmouth Household Reuse and Recycling Centre!

The main ‘shed’ is about one-and-a-half times the size of Brunel’s iconic ship, the SS Great Britain, and we have delivered the build in partnership with construction company Encon Construction. The state-of-the-art building will house cutting-edge sorting and processing equipment, substantially increasing our capacity to handle recyclable materials. The fit out is due to be completed early in 2025.

A local processing site of this size will allow us to minimise the environmental impact of our recycling efforts. Other local businesses will be able to reduce their mileage by using the site as well.

"This new facility represents a significant investment in Bristol’s future. Bristol is already the number one core English city for recycling, but we’ve got our sights set even higher. By improving local recycling facilities, we not only improve sorting and processing for Bristol Waste Company, but also for the sector in the Southwest of England.”

Dave Knight, Interim Managing Director

Watch a fly over of the new facility!

Once fitted out the new Avonmouth facility will boast several key features:

  • Advanced sorting technology: The building will be equipped with machinery capable of efficiently sorting a wider variety of recyclable materials. This will generate additional revenue by separating an even higher volume of valuable materials like steel, aluminium cans, cardboard, and plastic bottles.
  • Increased processing capacity: The new facility will allow us to process a significantly higher volume of recyclables. This means more valuable resources can be saved from going to waste, further reducing Bristol’s environmental impact and the need for virgin materials.
  • Local business opportunities: The availability of processing capabilities at Avonmouth opens doors for other local businesses to manage their recyclables efficiently.

Look out for more updates on the progress of the building!
