Weird Waste – what to do with used coffee pods or coffee grounds

Our #WeirdWaste blog series is here to answer the age-old question: “how am I meant to dispose of this?”

We’re exploring how to recycle, reuse or dispose of unusual household items.

Come with us, as we go beyond bottles, cans and card!

Today, we’re going to tell you how to recycle used coffee pods in Bristol.

How do I recycle coffee pods in Bristol?

For people who use coffee pod machines at home, reduce the environmental impact of your favourite morning brew, thanks to a partnership between Podback and Bristol Waste Company.

How does it work?

  1. Don’t bin your used pods! Store them at home until you’re ready to take them to your local recycling centre to be recycled – for free. Top tip: store used aluminium and plastic pods separately, this will help save time sorting when you get to the recycling centre.
  2. Book your recycling centre visit. You can book your visit up to two weeks in advance.
  3. Put your used coffee pods in the Podback containers at the recycling centre (no bags, boxes or other packaging please). Aluminium and plastic pods need to go in separate containers, these will be clearly signposted. If you need help, ask one of the staff at the site.

What happens to the used coffee pods?

Used coffee pods are sent to parts of the UK to be recycled. Aluminium pods are recycled in Cheshire and plastic pods are recycled in Yorkshire.

What about other coffee waste?

What about the coffee grounds out of your cafetiere or AeroPress?

For coffee lovers who don’t have a coffee pod machine, recycle coffee grounds in your brown food waste bin.

Coffee grounds are also great for home composting. Or, simply sprinkle into soil for a nutrient-rich addition to any pot, planter or boarder.

Top tip for loose used coffee grounds: use as the surface base for acid loving plants like azaleas, hydrangeas or blueberries.
