Recycle food waste

Join the thousands of Bristol residents who are recycling all their food waste. From banana peels to chicken bones, tea bags to plate scrapings – all food waste can be recycled in your brown bin or caddy.

In order to recycle food waste, Bristol needs to get more food out of our black general waste bins and into our brown food waste caddies!

Why is recycling food waste so important?

Free up space in your regular bin

If the average Bristol household put all their food waste into their brown food waste recycling bin, they’d free up about 25% of the space in their general waste bin. No more overflowing bins.

 Reduce the ‘ick’

Food waste recycling is collected weekly in Bristol. This stops bad smells building up and discourages pests.

Save Bristol money

Its expensive to dispose of general waste. Recycling your food waste in the brown caddy and food waste bin saves your city money – that’s good for you and your neighbours.

Power Bristol homes

Recycled food waste goes into an ‘anaerobic digester’ where it is turned into biogas, which powers thousands of Bristol homes!

What goes in your brown food waste recycling bin?

  • Raw and cooked food, bones, plate leftovers and coffee grounds. Remember: no food packaging please.
  • To keep your kitchen caddy clean, line it with compostable caddy bags, newspaper or even old plastic bags.

Top tip: reuse cereal or bread bags to line your kitchen caddy and make it easier to clean.
